The Great Sand Desert of Bilma , French : Grand Erg de Bilma , extends in north-south direction for almost 150 kilometers from Bilma to Agadem ( Niger ).

In the east it extends to the border to Chad from the west it is about halfway toward Fachi in the Tenere - sand desert over. From Bilma to Agadem there are about 80, in some cases very high, main dunes with over 300 smaller dune chains to overcome. The drive in the direction of N'Guigmi on Lake Chad over these almost piste-free sand dunes is one of the most difficult stretches in the entire Sahara. 50 km south of Bilma one arrives at the small oasis Zoo Baba . Here are some Tubu - nomadic families , a few date palms and a fountain with potable water. In 1986, the Dakar Rally led through the Great Sand Desert of Bilma.
