Location of Agadem in Niger

Agadem is a Sahara - Oasis in Niger with about 500 inhabitants.

Agadem is located on the southern edge of the Great Sand Desert of Bilma in the Ténéré desert and belongs to the municipality of N'Gourti in the Diffa region . Despite its small population, the oasis is recorded on many globes and atlases. The extremely difficult slope Bilma - Zoo Baba - Dibella - Agadem - N'Gourti - N'Guigmi - Diffa runs here . The whole area is salty over a large area. The salt layer is reminiscent of splintering glass when walking or driving on. The few date palms are grown by nomads at harvest timeharvested. A well supplies poor quality water.

The oasis was the destination of several European researchers in Africa in the 19th century. The German Gerhard Rohlfs described the evenings he spent here in 1866 as the most pleasant during his crossing of the Sahara. In 1870 Agadem was visited by the German Gustav Nachtigal . In colonial times, there was a French fort here, which today is in ruins and almost covered by sand. During the French colonial era, Agadem was initially assigned to the Bilma district, created in 1907, and in 1954 it fell to N'Guigmi . In 1986 the Dakar rally passed through Agadem.

According to the 2012 census, the place has 487 inhabitants who live in 62 rural households. At the 2001 census, Agadem had 218 inhabitants.
