N'Gourti is located in the south-east of the country in the northern Sahel zone and the Sahara desert . The average annual rainfall is less than five millimeters. In geological terms, the community is located in a Quaternary geological area. The small garrison of the Nigerien army, located in a lowland, is surrounded by high dunes.

The municipality is divided into 23 administrative villages, one traditional village, 16 hamlets, 21 camps and 118 water points. N'Gourti borders the neighboring state of Chad in the east . The neighboring communities in Niger are Bilma , Dirkou and Fachi in the north, N'Guigmi in the southeast, Kabléwa in the south, Foulatari in the southwest and Tesker in the west.

history

There are various contradicting legends about the founding of the place. The place name N'Gourti is derived from the Kanuri word n'gurtu , which means "hippopotamus".

In 1964, an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessors of the later departments. N'Gourti was added to the newly created arrondissement N'Guigmi, but received the status of an administrative post ( poste administratif ) in the area of the arrondissement. Administrative posts were special territorial units one level below the arrondissements, which were regarded as a kind of preliminary stage for a later conversion into a separate arrondissement.

The 1990 Dakar Rally led via N'Gourti. In 1998, the previous arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments. The administrative post of N'Gourti was removed from the department of N'Guigmi in 2011 and raised to the department of N'Gourti.

population

In the drought year of 1984, the population of the place skyrocketed. At the 2001 census, N'Gourti had 21,045 residents. At the 2012 census, the population was 51,767. N'Gourti is a language border for the two languages of the Tubu ethnic group : Tedaga is spoken to the north of the place and Dazaga to the south . The second largest ethnic group, after the Tubu, are Arabs who settled in the region from the middle of the 19th century, followed by the Fulbe . The Tubu, Arabs and Fulbe of N'Gourti have a predominantly nomadic way of life. In addition, minorities from Hausa and Zarma live in the community.
