Foulatari (also: Foulatéri ) is a rural community in the Maïné-Soroa department in Niger .

geography

Foulatari is located in the Manga landscape in the Sahel . The neighboring communities are N'Guelbély in the northwest, N'Gourti in the northeast, Chétimari in the southeast and Maïné-Soroa in the southwest. The settlements in the municipality are 101 villages, 80 hamlets , 140 camps and 22 water points. The main town of the rural community is the village of Foulatari.

history

The rural municipality of Foulatari was created as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a national administrative reform when the territory of the canton of Maïné-Soroa was divided into the municipalities of Foulatari, Maïné-Soroa and N'Guelbély.

The regional capital Diffa was attacked in February 2015 by the jihadist terrorist group Boko Haram from Nigeria . As early as May 2013, around 150,000 people from neighboring Nigeria had fled to Diffa because of the activities of Boko Haram. Now Foulatari was one of the places that took in refugees from Diffa.

population

At the 2001 census, Foulatari had 3,007 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, after enlarging the municipal area, the population was 30,953. Semi-nomadic Fulbe live in the community .

Economy and Infrastructure

The south of Foulatari belongs to the zone of rain-fed agriculture , the north is dominated by pasture farming. In between there is an area in which agropastoralism is the predominant form of employment.
