history

Maïné-Soroa was founded in the early 19th century as part of the Bornu Empire . The name of the city means "our chief has a mud-brick house". In the middle of the 19th century it was occupied by the Sultan von Zinder until it became part of French West Africa at the turn of the 20th century . In the Nigerian part of Bornus, Maïné-Soroa, along with Chétimari, Gouré and Goudoumaria, is one of the most important places where forms of traditional rule dating back to the Bornu Empire have survived to the present day.

The regional capital Diffa was attacked in February 2015 by the jihadist terrorist group Boko Haram from Nigeria . As early as May 2013, around 150,000 people from neighboring Nigeria had fled to Diffa because of the activities of Boko Haram. Maïné-Soroa was now one of the places that received refugees from Diffa.

population

At the 1977 census Maïné-Soroa had 4973 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 7381 inhabitants and at the 2001 census 9844 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 78,735. During the rainy season, Wodaabe , a fully nomadic people of cattle herders, move from the south to the area around the city.

The city is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the country's 30 civil courts , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance).

Maïné-Soroa is located on national road 1 , which connects the place with the Nigerien capital Niamey over a distance of around 1300 kilometers . The city is home to a civil airport with an unpaved runway, Maïné-Soroa Airport ( ICAO code : DRZM).
