history

Gouré ("Gure") in Stieler's Hand Atlas (1891)

Gouré became the capital of Mounio , a province of the Bornu Empire , in the first half of the 19th century . The ruler of Mounios at that time was Kosso, a son of Ibrahim from Bouné . Kosso fortified the city and founded a market, which was particularly important for the slave trade . When the German African explorer Heinrich Barth visited Gouré in 1853, around 9,000 people lived in the city, which is surrounded by watered gardens. Gouré was destroyed in an attack in the neighboring province of Zinder in 1863. The reconstruction lasted from 1865 to 1868. In 1874 Mounio was annexed as a province by Sultan Ténimoun dan Sélimane von Zinder. In 1903 France brought Moussa, the last ruler of Mounio, out of exile and, after a 29-year break, reestablished a traditional seat of power for him in Gouré. The Gouré market was one of the markets in the region authorized by the French administration at the beginning of the 20th century. In the colonial era, Gouré was the capital of a district that was called Manga District from 1925 . At the beginning of the 1930s, Jacques Gosselin , who later became Governor of Niger, was district commander in Gouré.

population

In the 1977 census, Gouré had 7,612 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 8,951 inhabitants and in the 2001 census 13,308 inhabitants. For the year 2010, after an enlargement of the municipality area, 65,987 inhabitants were calculated. Kanuri , Arabs , Tubu , Fulbe and Tuareg , among others , live in the multiethnic city . These include members of the Kanuri subgroup Manga, which mainly practices agriculture, the Kanuri subgroup Dagra , which mainly practices agropastoralism , and the Fulbe subgroups Bornanko'en, Oudah'en and Wodaabe and the Tuareg subgroups Kanimatane and Ikeshkazan , which specialize in remote grazing.
