Mahamadou Karidio (* 11. September 1953 in Gouré ; also Mahamadou Karidjo ) is a Nigerien politician .

Life

Mahamadou Karidio attended primary schools in Niamey , Ayérou and Tillabéri from 1959 to 1962 . After high school he went from 1971 in Zinder on the Normal School . From 1974 to 1976 he served in the Nigerien armed forces .

Karidio graduated from the Niamey University Education School in 1977 and then worked as an English teacher at secondary schools in Ouallam and Niamey. In 1984 he worked as the director of the American Model School of the Lycée Kassaï in Niamey. From 1984 to 1986 he was the assistant principal and English teacher at the Lycée Privé Bosso in Niamey. Karidio studied English at the University of Niamey parallel to his work, which he completed in 1986 with a maîtrise ès lettres . In the same year he became an English teacher at the Lycée Mariama in Niamey. In 1987 he founded the Lycée Alheri in Niamey, which he was director. From 1989 he worked again as an English teacher at the Lycée Mariama .

Mahamadou Karidio was a founding member of the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS-Tarayya) in 1990 . At its founding meeting at the end of the year, he became Deputy First Secretary for Organization and a member of the provisional party leadership under General Secretary Mahamadou Issoufou . In 1992 Karidio was appointed mayor of the municipality of Tillabéri and at the same time temporarily gave up his teaching profession. In the parliamentary elections on February 14, 1993 , he was elected to the National Assembly as one of 13 PNDS Tarayya MPs . There he worked as first quaestor until 1994, when he became chairman of the parliamentary commission for foreign affairs. From 1995 to 1996 he was Prefect of the Maradi Department. Karidio then worked again as a teacher from 1996 to 2011, this time at the Lycée Municipal de Niamey . He continued to serve as a senior PNDS Tarayya official. For example, he was appointed fourth deputy general secretary of the party at the party congresses of 2004 and 2009.

The PNDS Tarayya candidate Mahamadou Issoufou, who won the presidential elections on March 12, 2011 , brought Mahamadou Karidio into his government on April 21, 2011 as Minister of Defense . In this position Karidio succeeded the officer Mamadou Ousseini . The challenges during his tenure included Niger's participation in the MISMA and MINUSMA military missions in Mali and the fight against the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram . In 2015 he inaugurated the Cité Karidio Mahamadou named after him , a complex of 200 social housing for employees of the Ministry of Defense in the Niamey district of Gabou Goura . In the run-up to the presidential elections on February 21, 2016 , Karidio acted as the capital's campaign manager for incumbent Mahamadou Issoufou.

In the parliamentary elections on February 21, 2016 , he was re-elected as a member of the National Assembly. The re-elected President Issoufou appointed Hassoumi Massoudou as Karidio's successor as Defense Minister on April 11, 2016 .
