Goudoumaria is a rural municipality and the capital of the Goudoumaria department of the same name in Niger .

geography

Goudoumaria is located in the Manga landscape in the Sahel region and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the south . The neighboring communities in Niger are N'Guelbély in the northeast, Maïné-Soroa in the east, Bouné in the southwest, Gouré in the west and Kellé in the northwest. The municipality is divided into 193 administrative villages, 146 traditional villages, 54 hamlets, 167 camps and 33 water points. The main town of the rural municipality is the administrative village of Goudoumaria. The largest village in the municipality by population before the main town is Boutti . In the dune landscape of Goudoumaria there are several oases that benefit from the low water table.

history

Goudoumaria was founded in the first half of the 19th century in a previously uninhabited area by residents of the village of Kaoura, which was near Gouré and has since disappeared. Along with Chétimari , Gouré and Maïné-Soroa, Goudoumaria is one of the most important places in Mangari, where the traditional rule going back to the Bornu empire could be preserved.

In 1964, an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessors of the later departments. Goudoumaria was later added to the newly created Arrondissement Gouré (later the Department of Gouré ), but received the status of an administrative post ( poste administratif ) in the area of the Arrondissement. Later Goudoumaria fell to the neighboring department of Maïné-Soroa. In the course of a nationwide administrative reform in 2002, the canton of Goudoumaria became the rural community of Goudoumaria. The administrative post of Goudoumaria was removed from the Maïné-Soroa department in 2011 and elevated to the Goudoumaria department.

The regional capital Diffa was attacked in February 2015 by the jihadist terrorist group Boko Haram from Nigeria . As early as May 2013, around 150,000 people from neighboring Nigeria had fled to Diffa because of the activities of Boko Haram. Now Goudoumaria was one of the places that took in refugees from Diffa.

population

At the 2001 census, Goudoumaria had 72,784 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 100,559. This makes Goudoumaria the most populous municipality in the Diffa region .

Economy and Infrastructure

Goudoumaria is on National Road 1 . Soda and salt are extracted in the municipality. At the market in the main town, baking soda, dates and cattle are traded, which are sold to Diffa and Nigeria. There is another cattle market in the village of Boutti on Sundays. In the north of the community, agropastoralism is the predominant form of economy, in the south, rain-fed farming .
