Abdoua Kanta

Abdoua Kanta (* 1946 in Foulatari ; † April 9, 2017 in Niamey ) was a Nigerien journalist , writer and film director .

Life

Abdoua Kanta belonged to the Fulbe ethnic group . He initially trained as a teacher before turning to the media sector. In 1965 he completed his television training in Paris .

Kanta worked for the Office de Radiodiffusion et Télévision du Niger (ORTN), the state broadcaster of Niger. He worked as a radio presenter in French and in the national languages Fulfulde and Kanuri . With Mariama Keïta and Akoli Daouel , he presented the children's program Magazine des petits . From 1978, Abdoua Kanta was responsible for the conception and implementation of Télé Sahel , the ORTN's first regular television program. He also acted as a presenter on television. From 1978 to 1980 he was a sports and culture reporter for the magazine program Nous les Jeunes and at the 1978 Africa Games in Algiers he worked as an ORTN special reporter. From 1973 he also worked for the international broadcasters Radio France Internationale , Radio Canada International and Deutsche Welle .

The children's book author Andrée Clair introduced him to writing children's literature in the early 1970s and later also helped him find publishers in Europe. His greatest success was the book Halimatou , published in 1987 , which is aimed at eleven to twelve year olds and whose German translation - under the title Lelee, the Shepherd Girl - was awarded the Children's Literature Prize Blauer Brillenschlange in 1995. The book was filmed under the title Lelée as a co-production by FR3 and Télé Sahel .

As a director, Abdoua Kanta has made several feature films and documentaries, including one on AIDS . As an actor, he appeared in several plays for the theater company of the Center Culturel Franco-Nigérien . Kanta was also a founding member of the Nigerien writers' association Association des Ecrivains Nigériens and the Nigerien filmmaker association Association des Cinéastes Nigériens . From 1992 to 1994 he was Secretary General of the Nigerien media regulator Conseil Supérieur de la Communication (CSC).

Abdoua Kanta died in Niamey National Hospital after a long illness . He was buried at Yantala Muslim Cemetery in Niamey.
