Bilma [ Bilma ] is a department in the region of Agadez in Niger .

The department is located in the northeast of the country on the border with Algeria , Libya and Chad . It consists of the township of Bilma and the rural parishes of Dirkou , Djado and Fachi . The eponymous capital of the department is Bilma. In elections to the National Assembly, the Bilma department forms one of eight special constituencies across the country. While the regular constituencies, in which a certain number of MPs are elected, correspond to the eight regions of Niger, those entitled to vote in the special constituencies each elect their own MP.

history

The history of the Bilma department goes back to the Bilma district ( cercle de Bilma ) created in 1907 in the French military territory of Niger. After Niger gained independence in 1960, the national territory was divided into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ). One of them was the Bilma district. 1964 an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessors of the later departments. In the course of this, the Bilma district was converted into the Bilma arrondissement.

In 1998 the previous Arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center Bilma and the cantons of Bilma, Djado, Fachi and Kawar.

According to the 2012 census, the Bilma department has 17,935 inhabitants. In the 2001 census it was 17,080 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 8,454 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 7,409 inhabitants.

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
