Sahel Dimanche goes back to the weekly newspaper Le Niger , the first edition of which appeared on April 13, 1953, when Niger was still an overseas territory of France . Le Niger was created under the leadership of the Nigerien Progress Party (PPN-RDA). Since the First Republic (1960–1974), which was under the one-party rule of the PPN-RDA, the weekly newspaper served as a government organ. After the 1974 coup, the state media was restructured. During the Régime d'exception (1974–1989), the state weekly newspaper appeared under the name Sahel-Hebdo . Hebdo (from French hebdomaire ) means "weekly newspaper". In the first year of the Second Republic (1989–1992), Sahel-Hebdo was renamed Sahel Dimanche , and the print media department of the Information Ministry - the publisher of Sahel Dimanche and Le Sahel - became the Office National d'Edition et de Presse (ONEP) expanded.
