history
In 1938, Max Berk (1907–1993) took over the Mannheim lingerie factory Eppstein & Gerstle, where he himself had completed his training, and switched it to women's clothing. The factory was destroyed in the war . In 1945 he launched a women's collection in Heidelberg under the name Berk . In 1955 Berk came across the teenage fashion brand Betty Barclay in the USA , acquired the distribution rights for Europe from the American Jonathan Logan Group and founded Betty Barclay Kleidfabrik GmbH in Heidelberg. The first Betty Barclay collection was created in spring.
In the course of time, further brands were created for further sales lines. This includes the Vera Mont brand , whose first collection with elegant evening wear and cocktail dresses was presented in 1961. In 1968 the Gil Bret brand was added and the product line expanded to include coats and jackets. The sales volume rose to approx. 70 million DM. Due to the growth of the company, a move became necessary in 1968: the new company headquarters was built in Nussloch near Heidelberg on approx. 15,000 m². In 1971 more than 100 million DM were turned over. In 1972 Berk acquired the worldwide trademark and usage rights for the Betty Barclay brand from the American Logan Group. In 1978 Berk bought a church in Ziegelhausen and opened the Museum Textile Collection Max Berk in it , which still exists today and has belonged to the Palatinate Museum of Heidelberg since 2002 . Berk moved to the Board of Directors in 1982 and handed over management to his son-in-law Jürgen H. Winter. The latter founded the holding company Winter Holding GmbH & Co. KG . Max Berk died in 1993.
In 1983 the company's first in-house clothing combination program was designed. In 1987 Betty Barclay's first shops-in-shops opened in larger fashion and department stores. In 1992 the first licenses for their own fragrances were granted to Mäurer & Wirtz ; since then, numerous women's perfumes have appeared under the name Betty Barclay. Licenses for shoes and accessories followed in 1996/97. The first independent Betty Barclay store opened in Viernheim in 2002. At the same time, the Betty Barclay logo was modernized. The Gil Bret logo got a new layout in 2003. In 2004 the Vera Mont brand was expanded to include the VM by Vera Mont evening dress collection for young women. In the same year, Betty Barclay opened the Fashion Park outlet center in Nussloch , in which, in addition to the group brands, other brand manufacturers with shops also opened. Another fashion park exists in Arnstorf . In 2004/2005 another license for glasses was granted. In 2006, fashion jewelry was added to the portfolio. The upscale outdoor brand Saint Jacques was launched in 2007 and offered for the first time in 2008. From 2008, Betty Barclay cooperated with the cell phone manufacturer Nokia , which launched a Betty Barclay cell phone in 2010. In 2013, the Betty Barclay Group's brand portfolio was expanded to include the young leisure brand Cartoon , which was acquired in the USA in 2010.
