The Union of the Bulgarian National Legions ( Bulgarian Съюз на Българските Национални Легиони , SBNL for short) was founded in 1930 by several students in the Bulgarian capital Sofia as an impartial, anti-communist , patriotic youth movement . The federal newspaper was called National Leader (Народен Водач).
From 1933 the movement was led by Christo Lukow , a Bulgarian army general and former commander of the 13th Bulgarian Division in the last days of the First World War . Under his leadership it became a fascist organization that enjoyed some support from the German Reich . Despite this support, the movement did not get beyond the status of a far-right splinter group.
After Bulgaria entered the war on the side of the Axis powers , the federal government was able to increase its political influence a little. After the occupation of Bulgaria by the Red Army in World War II and the rise of the Communists between September 9 and 12, 1944, several hundred leading figures and members across the country were captured by the Communists, murdered or disappeared forever.
After Lukov was murdered on February 13, 1943 by a communist partisan group, the movement disintegrated and disbanded before the end of the war.
