Christo Lukow

Christo Nikolow Lukow ( Bulgarian Христо Николов Луков ; January 6, 1887 in Varna - February 13, 1943 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian Minister of War and leader of the anti-communist and ultra-nationalist Union of the Bulgarian National Legions (SBNL).

Military and political career

In 1907 he graduated from the military school. Lukow was promoted to major during World War I and was in command of an artillery battalion. From 1933 Lukow led the movement Union of the Bulgarian National Legions . In 1935 he was appointed Minister of War. Even before the start of World War II, he made connections with leaders in what was then Nazi Germany . With the help of German support, he expanded the SBNL into a fascist organization. He advocated participation of fascist Bulgaria in the Holocaust and the Eastern campaign .

Lukow was shot dead in front of his house in February 1943 by the communist partisans Ivan Burudschiew and Violeta Jakowa.

Memorial march

Since 2003, neo-Nazis have been commemorating Lukov in Sofia with a torchlight march every year . Neo-Nazis from Germany and other European countries also take part in the march every year. Again and again there are protests by human rights organizations. In 2017 and 2018 the mayor of Sofia tried to ban the march. However, the ban was ignored and the police secured the march. In 2019, around 2,000 right-wing extremists took part in the torchlight march. Neo-Nazis from Germany, Sweden and Hungary also traveled to the event.
