The Federal Office for Spatial Development ARE ( French Office fédéral du développement territorial , Italian Ufficio federale dello sviluppo territoriale , English Federal Office for Spatial Development ) is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation . It is Switzerland's center of excellence in matters of spatial and sustainable development as well as Switzerland's transport policy. It belongs to the Federal Department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication DETEC .

It is located in Ittigen , near the city of Bern.

ARE building

history

In 1972 the Federal Council appointed a delegate for spatial planning , and in 1980 the Federal Office for spatial planning was created. On June 1, 2000, the tasks of the Federal Office for Spatial Planning, the Service for General Transport Issues, Sustainable Development and the Alpine Convention were merged under the umbrella of the new ARE, Federal Office for Spatial Development .
