The colorful ore hover fly ( Cheilosia illustrata ) is a fly from the hover fly family (Syrphidae). Cheilosia is a very species-rich genus with around 80 species.

features

From a distance it looks like a small bumblebee ( bumblebee mimicry ). On closer inspection, you can see the broad, gray face with the long, light and thick hair. The antennae are very dark with an almost square third segment. The middle breast has a course from fox red to black and has long, light gray hair on the flanks. The abdomen can appear in several variations, from fox red or white to black or reddish hair. The legs are black and light in color on the knees. A brown band can be seen in the middle of the wings. Due to the conspicuous hairiness, it is difficult to confuse it with other species.

Occurrence

It is common in Europe, Central and North Asia. In Central Europe you can find them on forest paths, forest clearings and roadsides. It is very rare in the north. They fly from June to September with a peak during July and August.

Way of life

The adults show a decided flower continuity to bear's claw flowers . Even with a large selection of different umbelliferous plants, they can usually only be found on bear's claw flowers. The larvae are phytophagous and are bound to forests, especially moist deciduous forests.
