The Buntscharbe ( Phalacrocorax gaimardi ), also stained Kormoran called, is of a body length of 71-76 centimeters, a larger representative of the family of Kormorane .
Appearance
These birds have black head, back and tail plumage and a small white spot on their necks. The wings are decorated with many small white polka dots. The belly is gray, the throat is white. The rear part of the beak and the legs are conspicuously reddish in color. The rest of the beak is orange, the tip is curved and black. There is no such thing as gender dimorphism.
distribution and habitat
It occurs along the Pacific coast of the South American continent. She inhabits the offshore, small islands there.
Way of life
In search of food, the pied pigeon flies out to sea either in pairs or in smaller groups. They mainly eat small fish and crustaceans, which they prey from the air in a dive into the water. The birds have a chirping voice.
Reproduction
They can be found together as a pair or in small colonies for reproduction. The large nests are anchored to the rock floor with the help of drill worms or seaweed . The female lays 1–6 blue eggs in the nest, which are incubated for up to 30 days. Both parent animals take care of the young birds.
Danger
The IUCN classifies this species as Near Threatened (potentially endangered). The reasons for this are the industrial fishing nets, in which the birds often get caught and drown. To protect the species, several fishing zones have been designated in their habitat.
