Prosper Garnot

Prosper Garnot (born January 14, 1794 in Brest , † October 8, 1838 in Paris in the 10th arrondissement ) was a French marine doctor and naturalist .

Live and act

He was the son of François Garnot, an employee of the Citizens' Bureau of the French Navy, and Jeanne Claudine Laugée. Prosper Garnot's entire childhood was shaped by the Second Coalition War between France and Great Britain . In 1811 he joined the Napoleonic Navy with the aim of becoming a medic . For this he was trained in the hospital in Brest that same year. Even when the British blocked the French fleet at Cape Trafalgar , he went on board Cannonière no.20 to work there as a third-rate surgeon until 1814. In 1817 he became part of the crew of the frigate Hermione and later the frigate Hector , with which he sailed to Martinique .

On January 1, 1819, he was promoted to surgeon second rank and he returned to the Antilles in the middle of the year on board the Arthuse . Here he switched to the Africaine , with which he returned to France in November 1820. Another service followed in the Brest Naval Hospital before he was assigned to the frigate Amazon . In 1821 he undertook further medical studies that led to the dissertation essai sur le choléra-morbus on March 2, 1822 , which he dedicated to his father and his aunt, Mrs. Moyot .

Since the navy in Brest maintained a natural history and botanical museum, Garnot came into contact with zoological issues early on.

Under Commander Louis Isidore Duperrey and Second Commander Jules Dumont d'Urville , Garnot went as ship's surgeon and René Primevère Lesson as ship's doctor on board the corvette La Coquille , which was commissioned by King Louis XVIII on August 11, 1822 . and the instructions of Aimé Marie Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre from Toulon set out on a research trip around the world. With Ord he reached Mauritius , who informed him there that he had to switch to the King George IV under Captain John Prissick , which left Mauritius on May 31, 1824. In early July the ship was flooded and the captain tried to navigate the ship through San Sebastian Bay on the east coast of the Cape of Good Hope . The weather worsened and the ship finally capsized on July 15th. Garnot lost his collection and stayed with a Rouvière family at the Cape before returning to Paris on March 14, 1825.

On April 16, 1825, he was promoted to first-rate surgeon. He stayed in Paris to help Lesson review and document the zoological results. This appeared in two volumes under the name Voyage autour du monde exécuté par Ordre du Roi, sur la Corvette de Sa Majesté, La Coquille pendant les années 1822, 1823, 1824 et 1825 , which appeared in several deliveries between 1826 and 1831. Garnot published several articles in the Journal des Voyages and contributed to the Dictionnaire pittoresque d'Histoire naturelle under the direction of Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville . One of his contributions was published separately in 1837 under the title Quelques considérations sur les Nègres en général, du Nègre de la Nouvelle-Hollande en particulier . The article was extremely racist and made no distinction between Aborigines and Africans.

On December 28, 1827, he was promoted to senior surgeon second rank when he again worked at the Brest Naval Hospital. On May 23, 1828, he sailed on board the Bonne Henriette from Bordeaux to Saint-Pierre . Here he stayed at Fort Royal in Martinique until 1832 and became chief surgeon of the Navy. He was admitted to hospital in January 1833 and retired at the end of the year due to illness.

Dedication names

Lesson dedicated the name of the Garnot guillemot ( Pelecanoides garnotii ) to him in 1828 . Jacques Bernard Hombron and Honoré Jacquinot gave the silver petrel ( Fulmarus glacialoides ( Smith, A , 1840)) the name Priocella garnotii in 1844 .

André Marie Constant Duméril and Gabriel Bibron named a species of half-fingered gecko Hemidactylus garnotii in 1836 .

In 1829 Adolphe Brongniart introduced the plant genus Garnotia for the new species Garnotia stricta .

Memberships
