Jacques Bernard Hombron

Jacques Bernard Hombron (born April 15, 1798 (26 Germinal VI) in the 6th arrondissement in Paris , † October 16, 1852 at sea on board the ship Ferdinand ) was a French doctor and naturalist . Its botanical abbreviation is " Hombr. "

Live and act

His wife's name was Félicie Hombron, to whom he and Honoré Jacquinot (1815-1887 ) dedicated Columba Felicia , a synonym for the golden fruit dove ( Ptilinopus luteovirens ), in 1841 . Although it is not clear from the original description to whom the pigeon was dedicated, the naming was explained posthumously in Voyage au pole sud et dans l'Océanie sur les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zélée .

In 1821 Hombron became a marine surgeon and was initially stationed in Guadeloupe before finally coming to Brest . He became known through his participation in the South Pole expedition led by Jules Dumont d'Urville between 1837 and 1840 with the ships Astrolabe and Zèlée . He served as a medical officer on this trip.

Between 1840 and 1848 he was an employee of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle with the task of viewing and documenting the natural history collectibles of the expedition. Together with Honoré Jacquinot, he described many new plant and animal species that u. a. Published in various volumes by Voyage au pole sud et dans l'Océanie sur les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zélée .

After two more voyages between 1848 and 1850, he was appointed to Senegal in 1851 as deputy chief physician . He only stayed here for a short time and died probably due to illness on the return journey on board the Ferdinand .

Dedication names

Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte named the Mindanaoliest ( Actenoides hombroni ) in his honor in 1850 . Alfred Russel Wallace described Chalcophaps hombroni in 1865 , a name that is now synonymous with the Stephanta Dove ( Chalcophaps stephani Pucheran , 1853). In 1852 Hippolyte Lucas described a species belonging to the whites , which is now known as Appias hombroni . In 1886 Adrien René Franchet dedicated the cotula hombroni lye flower to him . In 1841 Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré published the new plant genus Hombronia for the species Hombronia edulis , a name that is now synonymous with Pandanus dubius .

In addition, the Hombron Rocks , a group of reef rocks in Antarctica, bear his name.
