Burchard Beckmann

Burchard Beckmann , also Borchart Bekeman or Borchard Bekmann (* before 1486 in Stralsund ; † July 1545) was a German politician and mayor of Greifswald .

Life

Born in Stralsund, Burchard Beckmann was enrolled at the University of Greifswald in 1486 . He became a bacc in 1490 . art. and obtained his Master's degree in 1492 . In 1495 he became a member of the artist faculty and until 1505 repeatedly its dean . He was canon of the collegiate monastery of St. Nikolai and was elected rector of the university in 1497, 1500 and 1502.

In 1505 he devoted himself to law and became a bacc. jur. u. PhD. In 1506 he became a member of the city council. Because of his merits he was elected mayor in 1508. During his tenure, the Catholic city council was forced by the senior citizens to let the evangelical preacher Johannes Knipstro come from Stralsund to Greifswald at the expense of the city.

Burchard Beckmann was married to Anna Lotze, a daughter of councilor Heinrich Lotze (1476–1509). Her daughter Elisabeth married the councilor Martin Völschow († 1590).
