Šaumburk Castle

The Moravian castle Šaumburk (German castle Schaumburg or originally castle Schauenburg ) is an abandoned hilltop castle above the village Podhradní Lhota on the hill Bašta in the Hostýnské vrchy in today's Okres Kroměříž in the Zlínský kraj region in the Czech Republic.

history

The Moravian castle Schaumburg was built by the Olomouc bishop Bruno von Schauenburg and first mentioned in writing in 1272. It had the dimensions of 120 × 55 meters and was built as the episcopal representative seat and administrative center for the Kelč dominion and to protect the trade route north of the mountains. With Nikolaus von Chorin ( Mikuláš z Choryně ) a burgrave is documented for the first time for the year 1275. After Bishop Bruno's death in 1281, the castle was damaged but then repaired. There is evidence of burgrave office for the years 1320 to 1325; in the following decades the castle was left to decay. Parts of the moats and walls have been preserved.

In the second half of the 14th century, it was built about half a kilometer north of the former castle in 530 m. ü. M. the New Castle Schaumburg ( Nový hrad Šaumburk ). Ruins of her have been preserved. They are now mistakenly called Zubříč .

Extensive investigations were carried out between 1977 and 1991 under the direction of the archaeologist Jiří Kohoutek, during which the dimensions of the castle were clearly larger than expected.
