The Alt-Oberhofen or Balm Castle is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle in the Swiss municipality of Oberhofen am Thunersee in the canton of Bern .
Location and description
The ruin is on the Burghalde above the Riderbach. It was a classic hilltop castle. Today some remains of the wall and the moat are still visible.
history
The castle was the ancestral seat of the barons of Oberhofen. When these became extinct at the end of the 12th century, parts of the rulership came to the Interlaken monastery , the Amsoldingen monastery and the von Eschenbach family. In the 13th century, Alt-Oberhofen Castle was probably abandoned and the moated castle on the lake was built.
