Bärnegg Castle

The castle Bärnegg is the ruins of a hilltop castle in Elsenau , in the municipality Schäffern in Wechselland , in Eastern Styria . It is under monument protection ( list entry ).

It was built in the late 12th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1312. The castle was owned by the noble families of the Perner , von Teuffenbach , von Reichenberg and von Rindsmaul . In the 17th century the arcade courtyard was expanded and in 1703 a palace chapel was built. Bärnegg Castle only fell into ruin in the last few decades.
