history
With the exception of the area around the Spital settlement, which belonged to the Johannitern in Fürstenfeld , what is now the community area belonged to Vorau Abbey when it was founded in 1163. However, the area fell to the Lords of Schildgraben as early as 1170, who opened up the northeastern part of Styria and built Bärnegg Castle near Elsenau. But they lost the castle and the surrounding land due to their participation in the aristocratic conspiracy against Frederick III. and could not recapture it until the middle of the 16th century.
The current cadastral communities of Elsenau and Götzendorf are first mentioned in 1316 as Puschenaw and Göczingsdorf . The other towns, including shepherds, were first mentioned in 1521.
Due to the location of the community in the border area with Hungary , the villages not only suffered from the reconquest by Frederick III, but also from the attacks of the Turks in 1532 and the Kuruzen in 1706. After that, the situation in the municipality has calmed down, with the exception of the two world wars.
On January 1, 1968, the municipality of Sparberegg, consisting of the cadastral municipalities of Sparberegg and Götzendorf, was merged with the municipality of Schäffern. On January 1st 1969 the cadastral community Sparberegg came from Schäffern to Pinggau.
