The Güns ( Hungarian Gyöngyös ) is a 72 km long river (with the Zöbernbach around 95 km) in central Burgenland and in western Hungarian Vas county . The Güns rises a little north of Bernstein in the Redlschlag district in the Bernstein Mountains . It reaches Hungarian territory near Rattersdorf , flows through the cities of Kőszeg ( Güns ) and Szombathely ( Steinamanger ) and finally flows into the Raab (Hungarian Rába ) after Sárvár ( Kotenburg or Rotenturm an der Raab ).
The course of the Güns river has two special features. After about 12 km the Zöbernbach flows into Lockenhaus . Although it covers an almost three times longer stretch of river up to the confluence with the Güns and has a significantly higher water flow, the Güns retains its name. Just before Szombathely and about halfway along the river, a large part of the Günswater is diverted into the nearby Perint ( Prenten ).
The Latin name of the Güns is Sibaris and gave its name to the Roman Sabaria , today's Szombathely. The current name Zöbern is likely to be a modification of "Sibaris" or "Sabaria".
