The Willersdorfer Gorge is a meadow landscape in the triangle between Lower Austria , Styria and Burgenland .

Location and landscape

The valley starts at Gschaidt in Lower Austria, in the southern Buckligen Welt in the Bernstein Mountains , and extends in the south to Willersdorf in Burgenland. To the south it extends into the southern Burgenland hill country

The Willersdorfer Gorge is traversed by the Willersbach along its entire length . It is located at an altitude of approximately 400 620  m above sea level. A. and extends for about 10 kilometers. .

In the valley floor (approx. 30–50 m wide), dry grass and ice age relics alternate in the form of floodplain strips . The connecting location between the changeover area and the Pannonian lowlands plays a major role in the diversity of species .

In addition to the boundary stone at the border triangle, there are two watermills in the gorge, the now unused but inhabited Valtlmühle and the dilapidated Patrizlmühle .

The castle, which was destroyed in 1289, is hard to see.

Use as a recreational area

The Willersdorfer Gorge is used for cross-country skiing, Nordic walking, horse riding and similar activities. At the side foothills of the gorge, inns offer the opportunity to rest.

As early as 1981 and 1991, an application was made for protection as a landscape protection area. Since the area and the associated competencies are spread across three federal states , there is insufficient protection. The Styrian part (municipality of Schäffern ) is located in the European bird sanctuary parts of the Styrian Jogl and Wechselland ( Natura 2000 area No. AT2229000). The Burgenland nature reserve Bernstein – Lockenhaus – Rechnitz ends 700 meters away.
