Fischhausen Castle

The castle Fischhausen is a castle on the regional road 810 of Hooksiel after Horumersiel in the municipality Wangerland in the district of Friesland .

history

The beginnings of the castle can be found in a division of the inheritance of the chieftains residing on the Oldeborg in Wüppels ; Fischhausen Castle then became the seat of a family of chiefs named after them. The first castle was built around 1400 by Matthias von Fischhausen. From this stone house, the two-storey residential palace with onion dome was built in its present form in 1578 . Chief Ricklef von Vischhusen, who in 1511 took over the government of Jeverland for the minor daughters of Edo Wiemken the Elder. J. took over and built a new castle, later called "the old stone house", on the site of the former outer bailey. His successor Boing von Waddewarden expanded the facility significantly. He was an important chief in Jeverland . In 1689 Lüdeke von Weltzien bought the castle and had the part of the "old stone house" that protruded from the escape demolished. It was also shortened to two storeys. In 1773 the castle was sold into bourgeois hands and from then on only served as a farm.

There are beautiful sandstone portals above the two entrance doors . The year 1578 can be seen on the tower door with the Fischhauser coat of arms . 14 marching points once belonged  to the Fischhausen estate. Today Fischhausen Castle is privately owned (Schiersch family) and not open to the public.

The area around the castle was placed under nature protection in 1980 as the Fischhausen nature reserve.
