Flatterstein Castle is a three-dimensional children's game by game designer Guido Hoffmann . The game for two to four players, ages six and up, lasts around 15-25 minutes per round. It was published by Drei Magier Spiele in 2016 and was included in the recommendation list for the children's game of the year 2016, and it was named simply the best for children at the 2016 Austrian game of games .

Theme and equipment

The game is about the race of several young magicians to the magic bat trophy, which is located on top of the battlements of Flatterstein Castle. The magicians are guided by bats and good spirits and have to defend themselves against evil torments.

In addition to the instructions, the contents of the game box consist of:

  • a three-dimensional game plan consisting of a base plate in the game box with recesses and the ruins of Flatterstein Castle with 10 steps and the target area
  • 4 pawns
  • a catapult
  • 30 fabric bats
  • a tormentor figure
  • 14 green helper cards and 14 red tormentor cards

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, the playing field and the castle with the target field and the stairs are set up. The other players each choose a color and place their figures in the corresponding starting fields. The bat catapult is placed in front of the game board, the bats are laid out next to it. The ghost cards are placed next to the game board, whereby the red tormentors are sorted out for the basic version.

Basic version

  • over the castle or next to it: no action

Starting with the starting player, the players can now take turns trying to place a bat with the help of the catapult so that they can advance on the board as quickly as possible. To do this, they place a bat on the catapult and use the air pressure to throw it onto the game board. If the bat remains on the floor plate, the courtyard, the corresponding player can move forward one space. If the bat lands on a step or remains in the castle, the figure may move forward two spaces; if the bat flies through a window, it is even three spaces. The player may not advance unless the bat lands next to or in front of the game board or flies over the castle. If, on the other hand, the bat lands in one of the moats in the castle courtyard, the player may not move forward either, but instead draws a ghost tile and can use this later in the game.

When advancing on the game board and in the castle, only free spaces are counted; occupied spaces are skipped and not counted. The damaged bridge spaces are also counted as a space, but a figure cannot stop on it and must either jump over it or stop in front of it. Ghost cards with helper ghosts, which a player received when his bat landed in the moat, are placed in front of the player and can be used by him at any time during his turn. With their help, players can either advance one space, repeat a bat excursion, or advance to an opposing player. A player may never have more than three cards.

When a player reaches the target field with the golden bat cup, the game ends and the one who arrives first wins.

Game variant with pests

For older and more experienced players there is a variant of the game in which the tormentor cards and the tormentor figure are used. The tormentor and helper ghost cards are shuffled and placed as a common pile next to the playing field. If a player draws a tormentor card, he passes it on to any other player who must use it on his next move according to the specifications. The tormentors force him to shoot the next bat with closed eyes or with the less favorable firing hand. A third card allows the player who has given the card to place the Quälgeist figure as an obstacle on a step in a window of the castle. However, if the active player's bat then gets stuck on the tormentor, it can move forward two spaces. If there are several nuisance cards in front of a player, he must consider all of them; the Quälgeist figure also remains as an obstacle in the event of a double attempt (helper spirit card).

It was included in the list of recommendations for children's game of the year in 2016 , and it was also recognized as a game hit simply the best for children at the 2016 Austrian game of games .
