The three-tower fortress was first mentioned in 1278 and was the center of the Gallenstein rule. Until the end of the 19th century it was a refuge and the administrative seat of the Admont Abbey , which was founded in 1074.
In order to save the roof tax , like many other castles, z. B. also the castle ruins Rauhenstein , covered in the 19th century the copper roof and sold to a coppersmith.
It was not until 1950 that the rebuilding of the castle ruins began. The Styrian Castle Association was the patron of the campaign. The castle has become a popular destination. The steep "Alte Burgweg" through a difficult to negotiate fore makes it clear why the castle was never conquered during acts of war. The new castle path, which can also be used by vehicles, leads through a tunnel that did not exist in the Middle Ages.
investment
The castle complex is dominated by a large donjon (residential tower). Battlements and outer walls were covered. A rectangular roofed gate tower secured the entrance. Donjon and gate tower have been preserved, battlements and farm buildings have not.
The castle has three Gothic towers with a square floor plan - typical for the Alpine countries - the “red”, “gray” and “white” towers. The battlements are roofed over to provide protection against arrow fire. Remains of Gothic tracery on the former castle chapel have been preserved from the early days of the castle.
A cultural festival takes place in the castle courtyard every summer.
