Gangelt Castle

The castle Gangelt is the ruin of a castle in the town of Gangelt (Am Bongert 5) in the Kreis Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Gangelt Castle was part of the town fortifications built around 1250, built in the 14th century and first mentioned around 1365. After 1400 the city fortifications had a city wall with four city gates , three of which have been preserved: The Heinsberger, the basement of the castle tower was also a city gate and the Bruchtor.

The castle, which was owned by the Counts of Schaesberg together with the fortifications and was rebuilt by Chancellor Gothart in 1511, suffered considerable damage when the Burgundians stormed the town in 1543 and was expanded after its reconstruction.

In 1791 the castle was demolished except for the keep ( residential tower ), which used to contain rooms. In 1945 the moat was buried with the ruins of the town. Restorations took place from 1986 to 1988.
