Helpenstein Castle

The Helpenstein Castle , also called Helpenstein Castle , is an old castle of the type of a tower hill castle (Motte) in the Neuss district of Helpenstein (near Grafenstrasse) in the Rhine district of Neuss in North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the literature, the designation "Helpensteiner Motte" or "Hoffberg" can be read early on; an artificially raised castle hill, which supported a permanent house whose founding time has not been finally clarified. Presumably there was also a previous system at the point. This is where the von Helpenstein family , who previously lived on the Fronhof or an old motte (tower hill castle) and who came to large estates, settled. They are recorded in Helpenstein from 1094.

In 1148 a Harpernus (or Harbernus) von Helpenstein was first mentioned in a document at the Helpensteiner Burg.

In 1386 the castle was destroyed by the United Rhenish cities because of suspected robber baron raids on Cologne merchants, which is rather unlikely since the Helpensteiners were wealthy and cannot be found in the “Society of Falbe Horses” (association of robber barons from the Lower Rhine). In 1370 the castle was completely destroyed a second time and in 1374 a new house was built next to the castle hill, called Haus Helpenstein.

description

The former castle consisted of a core castle and two outer castles . Today's Burgstall still shows the mighty seven-meter-high castle hill , which was partly destroyed by the strategic railway embankment , with an original diameter of 60 meters at the base and 40 meters at the top.
