history

5000 years ago this area served as a hunting area for the Stone Age people. The village of Wehl was first mentioned in writing in 817. In 1148 Helpenstein was listed in writing as "harpers". In 1314, the Archbishop of Cologne, Heinrich II von Virneburg, acquired the area and thus triggered a dispute with the von Helpenstein family. In 1670, Speck and Wehl belonged to the Electoral Cologne Dingstuhl Hülchrath and to the parish of Neukirchen with Neukirchen , Gubisrath, Haus Horr, Lübisrath, Mühlrath, Münchrath, Norbisrath and the Rüblinghoven desert. In the same year, Helpenstein owned 17 houses. In the vicinity of the place was the place of execution "Auf den Stöcken", where in 1629 13 women were executed as witches . In 1794 French troops occupied Helpenstein, Speck and Wehl. The small villages remained assigned to Hülchrath, which was renamed the municipality of Hülchrath in 1815 and was part of the new Grevenbroich district. In 1929 the name was changed to Neukirchen municipality. On January 1, 1975, Helpenstein, Speck and Wehl were reclassified to the city of Neuss.
