history

Kaaden Castle

The Gothic castle was founded around 1250 and served as the residence of the royal administrator. In 1421 it was partially destroyed by the crusaders after it had been captured by the Hussites two months earlier .

King George of Podebrady had the castle renovated in 1467. In 1504 Johann von Lobkowitz ordered the rebuilding of the crumbling castle, which lost its original Gothic appearance. The object suffered the greatest destruction during the Thirty Years' War , mainly by the Swedish occupiers.

In 1750 the castle was converted into a barracks on behalf of Maria Theresa . These were expanded after 1816. She served in the Austrian and Czech armies for the next 150 years. After a further reconstruction, the castle became the property of the city in the 1990s and is now used for cultural purposes.
