Kaunas Castle
The Kaunas Castle is the oldest masonry castle in Lithuania . It is located in the city of Kaunas , at the confluence of the Memel and Neris rivers . The castle was mentioned in a document in 1361. It had an important strategic position as it blocked the crusade against the break-in in Lithuania and the capital Vilnius . For this reason, the castle was attacked several times by the Teutonic Knights.
Wigand von Marburg , a diplomat of the Order of the Crusaders in Prussia, wrote in a chronicle that Kaunas Castle was made of bricks, had high walls, strong towers in the outer defensive wall and was surrounded by dikes and ditches. Kaunas Castle was defended by a large number of well-armed Lithuanian fighters, led by Vaidotas , the son of Prince Kęstutis . The crusaders occupied the castle only after fierce fighting that lasted almost a month.
The ruins of the castle are protected by the state.
