Lennewarden castle ruins

The castle Lenne Warden ( Latvian Lielvārdes pils ) was located on the right bank of the Daugava River in Lielvārde in today's Latvia . Only ruins of the original complex have been preserved, which have been under monument protection since December 19, 1998 .

location

The ruins of the castle are located on the right bank of the Daugava, where a deep river valley offered natural protection on the land side. The plateau in between is divided by two trenches , which gave a typical image of a section fortification.

history

Divu Kalns, the original castle hill

In the course of the missionary work of Livonia and the associated construction of fortifications , Daniel von Banerow was enfeoffed in 1201 by Albert von Buxthoeven with the Lennewarden (Lielvārde) on the Daugava. The existing on the located here Castle Hill Livukalns wooden defenses of Liven were constantly expanding. No remains of this complex have survived. Most of the ruins that have been preserved today date from the 14th century and are located opposite the original castle complex. Presumably, the Uexküll tower fortress located downstream served as a model for the construction of the complex, as it represented a suitable type for a small vassal castle. During the Livonian War , the castle was destroyed in 1577.

Others

The ruins of the castle are in a park with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lielvārde, the representation of the legend of Lāčplēsis , which is represented by carvings in tree trunks, and a museum for the Latvian poet Andrejs Pumpurs . A replica of the original wooden Lielvārde Castle is about a kilometer away.
