The derelict Radstadt Castle (formerly also the Capuchin monastery , now the vicarage) is located in the town of Radstadt in the Pongau region of Salzburg (Prehauserplatz 1).

history

The princely castle stood at the northeast corner of medieval Radstadt. It was the seat of the prince-archbishop's keeper , who was both district and city judge.

The castle is first mentioned in 1401; Whether it has anything to do with the lords of Radstadt attested in the 12th century cannot be clarified. In one floor arable from 1604, the castle is described as dilapidated ( “in the city of Radstadt an old castle has collapsed and is currently not inhabited” ).

This building came to the Capuchin Order in 1629 as a gift from Archbishop Paris of Lodron . It was from here that the Capuchins should carry out the recatholization of the Salzburg Ennstal in the course of the Counter Reformation . The castle was converted into a monastery with a high hall church, the foundation stone for the latter was laid on August 7, 1633. The church was consecrated on August 6, 1634 by Johann Christoph von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn , Bishop of Chiemsee and Auxiliary Bishop of Salzburg, in honor of Maria Hilf .

In 1748 the church was extended to the north, a tower of the former castle was removed. On July 20, 1748, Archbishop Andreas Jakob von Dietrichstein consecrated the enlarged church. From 1782 to 1833 the monastery belonged to the custody under the title of St. Rupert . In the course of secularization, ownership of the monastery passed to the Austrian state in 1816. In 1865 the monastery was spared from the major fire in Radstadt. During the Nazi era , the monastery in the North Tyrolean Province was closed in 1939. In 1945 it was partially postponed and in 1964 completely. Ownership of the monastery was transferred from the Republic of Austria to the Austrian Province of the Capuchin Order with the Provincialate in Innsbruck with the donation agreement of December 25, 1972. The monastery was closed in 1978 and on July 15, 1978 the property was transferred to the parish of Radstadt. From 1978 to 1980 the monastery was converted into a parish center. Since then, the local rectory has been housed in its premises. In 1983/84 the church was renovated.

The incunabula and prints of the 16th century of the monastery were moved to the Capuchin monastery in Salzburg . From there they were loaned to the library of the Salzburg State Archives in 1987.
