The castle Richstein was on a hill above the small town. Richstein is a district of the city of Bad Berleburg in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
history
The hilltop castle may not have been built until the second half of the 14th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1384. Landgrave Hermann II of Hesse handed the castle over to Count Johann I von Sayn-Wittgenstein (1384–1427) as a fief that year . The feudal relationship was confirmed in 1416, 1427 and 1490.
Bailiffs of the Counts of Sayn-Wittgenstein had been sitting at the castle since 1415 . In 1502, Count Wilhelm the Elder von Sayn-Wittgenstein (1494–1568) assigned the castle as a widow's seat to his wife Johannetta von Isenburg .
After the castle complex had become militarily worthless, it fell into disrepair in the second half of the 16th century. Today the former castle complex shows only small remains of the foundations.
