history
The first written mention of Richstein comes from the year 1384 and gives the Richstein Castle (in the original: Rischenstein) as a fief to the Wittgensteiners .
From the 15th century onwards, Richstein became a so-called freedom with its own official seat and regional court. In 1590 the village, which until then had been on the castle hill, burned down completely. As a result, the castle fell into disrepair. In the 16th century the construction of the village began, which was now settled in the valley. Another fire in 1828 also partially destroyed the new village.
In 1969 the two-class school was closed.
Until the incorporation, which came into force on January 1, 1975, the place was an independent municipality in the then Wittgenstein district .
As part of the Habitats Directive , a 14.8 hectare nature reserve was set up in the immediate vicinity of the village in 1991.
