history

The village of Dotzlar is one of the oldest settlements in the Wittgensteiner Land. The final syllable lar comes from the Celtic, as do the names of the villages Hemschlar, Schüllar etc. The old Fliehburg, which still bears the name of the Berg Burg, should prove the old age of the village. Dotzlar is first mentioned in documents in 1418; but it is assumed that it was founded 500–600 years earlier.

On the night of March 30th to 31st, 1944, the Royal Air Force launched an air raid on Nuremberg. On approach, a Lancaster crashed on the Meisbach. The crew died.

Since January 1, 1975, the former municipality of Dotzlar has been a district of Bad Berleburg , one of the largest cities in Germany, due to the local reorganization .
