geography

The village of Girkhausen with almost 900 inhabitants is located about 10 km north of Bad Berleburg ( Siegen-Wittgenstein district ) in the narrow Odeborn valley , just a few kilometers south of the Kahler Asten ( 841.9  m above sea level ) and not far from the Rothaarsteig .

history

The first documentary mention of the place goes back to the year 1220. A knight Cunradus de Gerhatinkusen, member of the knight dynasty of the Gerhartinkusen, testified at that time as a witness in a trial. The place itself is probably a lot older. The naming, which goes back to the knights, later changed over many intermediate forms to today's Girkhausen. The hamlet Reppringhausen belongs to the place .

Since January 1st, 1975 Girkhausen belongs to Bad Berleburg. The place Hoheleye was assigned to the city of Winterberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis .

Population development

  • 1961: 0922 inhabitants, 25 of them in Hoheleye
  • 1970: 0985 inhabitants, 42 of them in Hoheleye
  • 1974: 1022 inhabitants, 48 of them in Hoheleye
  • 2011: 0933 inhabitants (without Hoheleye)

Culture and sights

The center of the village, visible from afar, is the former pilgrimage church from the 13th century. It is a two-aisled and two-choir church. Until the Reformation this was a well-known St. Mary's Church with the image of Mary. This Madonna von Girkhausen then disappeared without a trace. As a special feature, the almost 30 meter high church tower has been isolated from the rest of the church building since 1680. The townscape of Girkhausen is characterized by numerous beautiful half-timbered houses. Another attraction is the Drehkoite , a local history and handicraft museum, where you can still experience the old tradition of wooden bowl turner and wooden spoon carving with your own eyes.

Sports facilities

There is a natural grass sports field in Girkhausen, which is used by VfL Girkhausen. This was known for having a rather elongated shape. Because of this, the penalty area is relatively large and many penalty kicks occur during the games played there .
