history
Hemschlar is one of the oldest settlements in the Wittgensteiner Land. The ending "-lar" in the name suggests an origin in the Saxon period. The size and shape of the settlement often changed its appearance. At the beginning of the 16th century, only one farm is known. In 1781 Hemschlar has grown to 5 houses and belongs to the Berghausen school. In 1819 this moved to the Dotzlar district . In 1845 Hemschlar was again assigned to the Berghausen office. In 1900 there are 224 inhabitants in Hemschlar.
Hemschlar has belonged to the Bad Berleburg urban area since the regional reform, which came into force on January 1, 1975, and was an independent municipality of the Berghausen office in what was then Wittgenstein district until it was incorporated .
