The Sümeg Castle ( Hungarian Sümegi vár [ ˈʃymeɡi va: r ]) is located in Hungary on a hill above the town of Sümeg in the Veszprém county , about 20 kilometers north of Lake Balaton .

history

Earlier

It was built in the second half of the 13th century as a gift from King Stephen V of Hungary to the diocese of Veszprém and initially consisted of a tower, the cistern and a few other rooms. It was first mentioned in a document in 1301. Under Bishop Albert Vetési was Burg further expanded in the 15th century.

After the fall of Veszprém in 1552, Sümeg was the bishop's residence and the castle was expanded again. Bishop András Kövessy had a cannon bastion built on the northeast side , which is still named after him today.

The castle played an important role during the expansion of the Ottoman Empire . It was besieged several times, but could never be captured by the attackers. The Turkish troops returning from the lost battle of Szentgotthárd captured the city and set it and the castle on fire. The castle was repaired under Bishop István Sennyei .

During the Rákóczi freedom struggle (1703-1711) the castle was conquered by the rebels, but could be recaptured in 1709 by imperial troops. In 1726 it was set on fire again and its gates were blown up.

today

In the years up to the fall of the Iron Curtain , the castle's condition deteriorated considerably.

In 1989 the current captain of the castle received the operating license and made it a destination for tourists. There are jousting games and "medieval dinners". From the restored castle walls you have a very good view of the surrounding country. The castle has since been restored and redeveloped with the help of Norwegian investors.
