The ruins of Žumberk Castle are located near Žumberk ( Schumberg ) in Okres Chrudim , Pardubický kraj , Czech Republic .
The castle was first mentioned in 1318. The original name of the castle was "Sunenberg" and its German name suggests that it was built at the end of the 13th century. The first recorded owner was the Vladike Pilunk von Schumberg ( Pilunk ze Žumberka ). In the same century the castle came into the possession of the Lords of Boskowitz .
In the 15th century, the castle and place Schumberg belonged to the Zaruba von Hustiřan ( Hustířany ). In 1700, Herr von Lisov sold the Schumberg estate to Josef Franz von Schönfeld . From the beginning of the 17th century the castle began to deteriorate. The last residents left the castle in the years 1760-1770.

The castle had the shape of a pentagon through a ridge in the south and was protected on the north, east and south-east sides by a deep and wide moat. The Palas of the castle was located on the sheltered back to the south. The remains of the palace and the keep have been preserved. The castle ruins are freely accessible.
