According to archaeological investigations by the Swiss National Museum , based on the findings, it can be assumed that the area was settled around 1200 BC.

Like the whole of Hof Arth, the island of Schwanau also belonged to the Lenzburg counts . After their extinction, the island fell to the Kyburgers around 1173 . They were taken over by the Habsburgs around 1273 . The oldest part of the keep dates back to the time of Kyburgs and was probably created around 1200-1240. This included a curtain wall that surrounded a residential building. The castle was destroyed in a fire around 1250. It is not clear whether the destruction can be attributed to a military conflict. The castle was never rebuilt. However, the island was mentioned again in the Middle Ages. In the Sarnen Landschreiber Hans Schriber's White Book of Sarnen, he mentions the island under the name Swandowe .

In 1684 the island was inhabited by the hermit Johann Linder. In the same year the chapel was built ( St. Johann Chapel ). However, this was heavily devastated during the French occupation. The tidal wave triggered by the Goldau landslide in 1806 then completely destroyed the existing buildings. In 1809 the Schwyz parish sold the island to General and Governor Ludwig Auf der Maur. With the purchase he undertook to rebuild the chapel and to take care of the maintenance of the castle ruins. In 1967 the Auf der Maur family sold the island back to the Canton of Schwyz.

The chapel and castle ruins have been preserved to this day. An inn has also been added.
