Hans Schriber
Hans Schriber (* in the 15th century, probably in Engelberg ; † before May 1, 1479 ) was a Swiss land clerk , notary , delegate of the daily statutes and arbitrator. He was the author of the White Book of Sarnen , in which the Tell legend was first written. In doing so, Schriber shaped the identity of Switzerland in particular. The Germanist Peter von Matt said in 2011 in the NZZ am Sonntag : "No Swiss author has ever written a work of greater impact."
Life
Schriber probably came from Engelberg, where he probably received his training in the local monastery . His father was Johann Schriber from Engelberg, his mother Anna Töngi from Wolfenschiessen . His father was also a scribe and wrote the Wolfenschiessen yearbook . His brother, Benedictine Father Jost Schriber, was a pastor in Küssnacht .
From 1434 to 1478 he worked in the town hall of Sarnen as a land clerk for Unterwalden ob dem Wald . He had a good knowledge of Roman law and translated Latin documents into German. He also appeared as a delegate from the Diet. He completed his Chronicle of Sarnen before 1474. As a land clerk he last wrote in July 1478, and according to the Landsgemeinde on May 1, 1479, he was described in a document as deceased.
Works
Schriber wrote the «White Book of Sarnen» around 1470. In the first part of around 350 pages, this contains copies of documents and contracts from the early Confederation that are important for Obwalden . The second part of 22 pages or 706 lines describes the history of the Urner , Schwyzer and Unterwaldner . On 66 lines of the second part, the legend motifs, which were later decorated again and again, are described, underpinned by names of persons and places. Here you can find the oldest descriptions of the various elements of the liberation sagas: evil bailiffs who have exceeded their competencies, tortured subjects and various secret meetings on the Rütli and especially the story of "Thall" ( Wilhelm Tell ). As part of the printed Swiss chronicles by Petermann Etterlin (1507) and Aegidius Tschudi (1734–36), this was also used as a template for Friedrich Schiller's 1804 drama “ Wilhelm Tell ”.
