Giuseppe Nogari (* 1699 in Venice , † 3. June 1766 ) was a Venetian painter of the Rococo , best known as a portrait painter .

Life

Nogari was a student of Antonio Balestra . He was influenced by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta , Rosalba Carriera , Jacopo Amigoni and Rembrandt (whose drawings he knew from the collection of Zaccaria Sagredo and other collections). In Venice he painted especially for the German artist patron Sigismund Streit (1687–1775, some of which are allegories in the Berlin Gemäldegalerie ) and Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg (from the 1730s). From 1739 to 1742 he was involved in the painting of the Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) in Turin and the Stupinigi hunting lodge . After returning to Venice in 1743 he worked for Francesco Algarotti , King August III. ( Portraits of, among others, philosophers today in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie) and the British consul Joseph Smith (today in the Royal Collection in Hampton Court and Edinburgh). Further paintings are in the Kassel picture gallery. He also painted for churches in Venice (Cathedral near Bassano , Frari ).

In 1726 he became a member of the Venetian Painters' Guild and in 1756 of the Venetian Academy of Arts. His students include Alessandro Longhi and Johann Gottlieb Prestel .

His portraits often show elderly people from poor backgrounds against a dark background.
