history

The first mention of the castle Het Steen ("The Stone") dates back to the 12th century . This makes it the oldest preserved building in the city of Antwerp. The castle was part of the city fortifications and was intended to protect access to the city from the direction of the Westerschelde . In 1520, Emperor Charles V decided that the castle should be renovated and rebuilt to accommodate artillery .

The castle was later used as a prison. The crucifix above the entrance still bears witness to this today . It symbolizes the point where criminals sentenced to death had to say their last prayer before execution.

The Steen served as a prison until 1823 , after which the building had different provisions, e.g. B. as a house, sawmill and fish warehouse. From 1862 the building was a museum of antiquities and from 1952 to 2008 the National Maritime Museum. Here ship models of famous, historical ships, as well as paintings, nautical instruments, photos and documents could be viewed. The original of the West Hinder III lighter could also be viewed . The collection can now be viewed in the Museum aan de Stroom .

Little is known about the original state of the castle. The newer complex from the 16th century was built according to the standards of the nobility for more comfort. The actual keep no longer exists. In contrast, massive, palatial buildings were built. Above the main entrance there is a battlement with machicolation . A massive round tower with battlements secures the entrance on the right, another round tower with a conical roof and machicolation is on the left. Bastions to accommodate the artillery were built on the lake side . The architectural style of the complex is striking. The stepped roof gables are clearly Hanseatic.
