The castle Upleward is an Outbound Wasserburg . It stood in the northeast corner of the village of the same name in the Krummhörn .
history
It is unclear who built the castle. Presumably it was members of the local noble family of chiefs who initiated the process. They are first mentioned in 1409 in the person of Hilmer Edelinga. Around 1420 he and his brother Acko owned the castle. Hilmer's grandson, Ubbo Tidena (mentioned 1469), married Hebrich Beninga von Grimersum . From then on, their descendants were nicknamed Beninga. After the death of the last male descendant of the Upleward family, Tido Beninga, Wilhelm zu Inn- and Knyphausen inherited the castle and lordship of Upleward around 1600. Both later came into the possession of the Barons of Bevervoerde. In 1782 the castle was finally demolished. Today nothing is left of her.
