The castle Velgau is an Outbound hilltop castle in the Austrian market town Gratkorn in Styria . The history of the castle goes back to the 12th century and ends in the 14th century.

Location

The exact location of the former castle can no longer be localized, but it was near the present-day town of Gratkorn. Robert Baravalle suspected that they are at the last summit of the mountain was trending to the southeast ridge. This crest drops steeply on the north-western edge of the church village of Sankt Stefan to a small valley that flows into the Murtal . Peter Cede, a connoisseur of local Siedlungsgeographie, 1984 located the alleged location at the end of Felber valley , at Felber farmers. Ingo Mirsch, on the other hand, uses a Reiner deed from 1346 to locate the castle in the area around today's Hausbergschneider farm.

history

It is not known exactly when the castle was built, but it was probably in the 12th century. A certificate issued by Ottokar III in 1136 for the Rein monastery names a Rudeger de Velgowe as one of the witnesses. The document which proved that Rudeger's family was related to the Lobmingers and the Puxers and probably moved from Upper Styria to the Graz area at the end of the 11th century , turned out to be a forgery. The origin of the Velgauer is therefore unknown. A little later, a branch of the family built the strategically more favorable Gratkorn on the top of the local mountain. In 1159 a Rüdiger von Lueg is mentioned, who was probably identical with Rudeger de Velgowe. In 1164 a Dietrich is mentioned, around 1165 a Rudolf, 1179 an Otto de Velgowe and in the years 1209, 1210 and 1211 a Swikerus de Velgov is mentioned.

A Leutoldus von Velgau is mentioned in 1292 as a servant of the Count von Pfannberg . In October 25, 1322, the brothers Ulrich and Leutold von Velgau and their mother Gertrude renounced several goods in Velgau in favor of the Göß monastery . This waiver is the last documentary mention of the Velgauer family, who, presumably due to insufficient income from the possessions, could no longer maintain the residence and let it expire. In the country Princely total land register from the year 1265 was Velegan already unspecified outlined area, probably the area of the later village of Sankt Stefan called and also a Reiner deed dated 13 August 1271 calls with Velgowe an area and no hunting.

Otto, Wolfger and Ull von Lueg gave the monastery Rein on July 25, 1346 the farmstead "the da leit auf dem puchel pey Velgaw" as part of a donation. This naming suggested, among others, Anton Mell that this farmstead was at the former location of Velgau Castle. The name Velgau also appears as an area name for an area near Sankt Stefan into the 15th century. So this area in the year 1395 is not described as Velgow , in 1400 as Velgaw and in 1450 as Weldgaw called.
