The castle was probably built around 1100 to 1130 by Count Marquard from the Counts of Veringen in the county of Veringen and mentioned in 1134. Around 1200 the castle was redesigned in a humpback square construction and the residential tower was rebuilt. In 1344 Count Heinrich von Veringen sold the rights to the castle and town with the associated villages to Counts Eberhard and Ulrich von Württemberg . In 1464 the castle was repaired by Hans von Werdenberg , and in 1487 further construction work was carried out on the castle. In 1633 the "castle" below the castle at Veringen was ruined (not destroyed) by Sweden under General Horn . The old castle fell into disrepair and was used as a quarry for several generations. From 1978 to 1983 the ruins were secured and are now freely accessible.

description

City, Church of St. Nicholas , the ruins with Peter Chapel (view from the west)

The castle complex together with the city formed a technical fortification unit and can be divided into two construction phases. In the 12th century it was a simple complex with a tower, half-timbered buildings and palisade defense , in the second phase of construction the complex was rebuilt around 1200 in a humpback square construction, the tower to the dimensions 15.30 by 16 meters with a wall thickness of 3.30 to Enlarged 3.50 meters and converted into a heated residential tower .

The late Romanesque St. Peter's Chapel with a rectangular interior and semicircular apse dates from 10/11. Century and is therefore much older than the castle. After the castle was built, it served as a castle chapel .
